Mitochondrial medicine: a journey through the magic circle and beyond

Mitochondrial medicine: a journey through the magic circle and beyond

Prof. Massimo Zeviani | Director MRC Mitochondrial Biology Unit, University of Cambridge, UK

Summary: Mitochondria are cellular organelles that are fundamental to the functioning of essentially all cells in the human body. The research group led by Prof. Zeviani has identified several disease genes, each responsible of distinct defects in mitochondrial function associated with paediatric or adult-onset clinical presentations. In this seminar, Prof. Zeviani will describe the role of mitochondria in normal and disease conditions, and will discuss some issues that have recently received great public attention, such as the story of little Charlie Guard, and the techniques used to create ‘three-parents babies’

Speaker’s biography: Prof Zeviani is a world-leading scientist in the field of mitochondrial medicine. He identified and characterized several inherited human disorders due to defects of the respiratory chain caused by mutations in both mitochondrial and nuclear genomes. He has pioneered the use of next generation sequencing techniques to identify new disease-genes in mitochondrial patients. By exploiting in vivo models, including yeast, flies, mice and pigs, he unravelled the pathogenic mechanisms of several mitochondrial diseases and explored innovative therapeutic approaches, some of which are currently being translated to the patients.
