The Pace of History, the Shape of Democracy #8 - The New Minority: Trump, Brexit, and the White Working Class Revolution

Justin Gest (George Mason University and UCL)
in conversation with Andrea Mammone (Royal Holloway, University of London)

Once in the middle of American and European societies, today white working class people have drifted to the margins and are transforming their national politics. How did this happen? And what could possibly lead a group with such enduring numerical power to, in many instances, consider themselves a “minority” in the countries they once defined? In this event, Justin Gest, in conversation with RHUL's experts of right-wing extremism nationalism will report findings from original surveys and full-immersion fieldwork among the white working class people of once thriving industrial cities to draw impactful conclusions about their political behavior. He makes the case that the tension between the vestiges of white working class power and its perceived loss have produced the unique phenomenon of their radicalization.
